about nicci.doula

IAs a very young mom (I just turned 23 when my first son was born) I equipped myself with knowledge to enable me to cope with the birth of my first child. I read many, many books all of which didn't help the tiniest bit when I got my first contraction - I forgot every single thing I have ever read on correct breathing, enemas and meditating between contractions when I went into labour prematurely!  I was a screaming mess and I remember wishing so hard that somebody could just calm me down and tell me what was going to happen next. But my poor husband was just as freaked out as I was, and all that mattered to the medical personnel was my baby - of course! Had I known about the existence of 'doulas' it could have been such a different experience for me!

Ever since the traumatic (premature!) birth of my firstborn, the subsequent birth of his brothers, 6 infertility treatments, 3 miscarriages and 1 adoption, it has always been a dream of mine to make a difference in the birthing world. A REAL difference that would change lives for the better.  I never knew how or where this was going to happen, but I did have a silent trust in me that it would. And it did the day I became a doula!

I am wife to Christo and mother to three beautiful boys, Nathin, Kevin and  my 'laatlammetjie' JD. I reside in a leafy suburb at the foot of the Magalies mountains.  Memphis and Gracie and Jaxon are our fur-babies. I love all my children (four-legged and two-legged) very much and I am extremely proud of them. Besides being a mom, I am a life coach, an avid reader, an indie writer, a professional photographer, a qualified events manager and of course, I am a Birth, Bereavement and Adoption Doula. I am the CEO of NCOT and JOUNE WELLNESS and I have also written South Africa's first ever dedicated book on perinatal bereavement called WHEN THE SHADOW COMES available on Amazon  and Goodreads. I am also a living kidney donor - something that I am very passionate about!

How it started

I always had a passion for everything baby! However, I firmly believe my doula career was born the day I saw my niece Emma being born! It was absolutely incredible. I love being there for my clients (who become my friends) whether it's by assisting them during the loss of a baby or the joyous occasion of a birth with a positive outcome. (Although I resigned as director of VOTUB and DOSA due to time constraints, I am still very passionate about doulas and parents' rights to bury their babies!)
